EDGE was appointed via direct award through our Professional Services Framework to provide support to Nottingham College for a refurb at its 25 Stoney Street campus. This project in particular highlighted EDGE’s expertise in Building Surveying, with the consultancy leading from the initial funding bid, right through to post-completion aftercare.

EDGE delivered on this by providing services including:

  • Principal Designer Role
  • Cost Management
  • Contract Administration
  • Quality Monitoring

The scheme itself covered several core elements, including refurbishment and maintenance works to existing single glazed sash windows throughout the building, and the overlaying of an existing flat roof with new cut to fall flat roof system.

M&E upgrades were carried out across the building’s seven floors including, covering CCTV, fire alarms, access control, lighting, small power/data, and distribution board installations. Finally, the ground floor layout was refurbished and re-configured, including relocating an existing shop to the front elevation, forming a new classroom, and refurbishing an existing classroom and gallery. A new communal space with furniture including reception area was created with bi-folding partitions and replacement of all floor finishes, while new flooring and wall decorations were applied to all studios throughout the building.

As part of the completed works the college now has improvements to energy usage, additional learning spaces, and improved security and end user management. Pupils, staff and visitors of the facility now also benefit from extra flexibility, with the ability to utilise areas as large communal areas or independent rooms, thanks to bi-folding partitions. Other successful additions include an innovative design solution which optimises available spaces and the repositioning of a reception desk to improve security through improved site of the main entrance door.

Jonathan Oram, Director of Frameworks at Pagabo, said: “The refurb of Nottingham College is a scheme that showcases EDGE’s versatility and ability to provide an exceptional service through the lifecycle of a project.

It’s fantastic to have our Professional Services Framework connected to projects like this and we look forward to seeing how these works have improved the education of the East Midlands students.”

Matt Flint, Associate Director at EDGE, said: “As always, there were a number of challenges to be overcome with this scheme. In terms of pre-contract challenges, finding a balance between space requirements on the ground floor to best optimise the new layouts and ensure each area had adequate space to function as envisioned.

Post-contract saw a very strict timescale so as not to disrupt teaching, as well as dealing with the unexpected items that come with Grade II listed buildings, in this case this was a drop ceiling. However, the project was successfully completed thanks to collaboration across the wider project team, and we’re very pleased to see the work complete – especially being just around the corner from our Nottingham office.”

EDGE also had to consult with the client over and above what was initially agreed as a late decision was made to give the ground floor toilets a refresh. As such, EDGE negotiated with the client and contractor on what could be achieved within the time scales and budget.

Ian Eastoe, Estates Project Manager at Nottingham College, said: “EDGE provided an excellent service, from the initial funding bid which helped to secure funding to the post completion aftercare.”

Jack Hicton, Contracts Manager at Westminster Building Company, said: “EDGE’s communication throughout the project was excellent, ensuring that meetings were documented and actions were made clear. They also ensured that contract instructions were provided quickly, ensuring the smooth running of the project.”
